No longer ago than 2006, Las Vegas reigned supreme in the gaming world. The mention of this name inspired (and still inspires!) players and tourists from the four corners of the world. This gaming capital is the home of poker players who meet, each year, in that Mecca of poker tournaments: the WSOP. Millions of tourists arrive in “gaming hell” to discover Las Vegas Boulevard (better known as Las Vegas Strip) lined with numerous casinos. The casinos are all finer, more luxurious and more immense than each other and there is no shortage of superlatives. Whether it be Bellagio Hotel, The Venetian, MGM Hotel, The Rio (and many others), these casinos advertise the lustfulness and excess of America’s “gaming hell”.
Even so, Las Vegas has to face up to a formidable competitor which ousted it from its place as leader two years ago: Macao. Macao, a former Portuguese colony transferred to China, has become, in the space of a few years, the international gaming capital. This country represents the only place in China where gaming is permitted and millions of Chinese and Asian tourists go there for entertainment, principally on the table games. The owners of the Las Vegas casinos quickly invested billions of Dollars in Macao, making it a gaming centre which it is impossible to ignore.
In the “lightweight” division, Atlantic City is famous and is also one of the gaming Meccas, even though, in terms of visitor numbers and gross revenue from gaming, the figures are not comparable to the two heavyweights, Macao and Las Vegas.
Monaco (Société des Bains de Mer) also ranks among the gaming capitals and its image is often associated with casinos. Who has never dreamed of setting foot in one of these prestigious Monegasque casinos, where the cars outside make you reel?
Gaming is international and man likes to play.
