Texas Hold'em poker
Texas Hold'em poker
Texas hold ‘em is currently the most played and best known version of poker, notably in its no-limit betting form used during the main event of the World series of Poker (WSOP).
The rules of Texas Hold’em are easy to understand but, even so, that does not make the game any simpler. Because Poker began in the United States, the technical jargon used during games is generally in English, even in France, although sometimes a mixture of the two languages (French and English) is found, or even “Frenchified” versions of the English terms.
The basic rules of poker are easily learned.
Firstly, the aim of the game
The goal is to win money by having the best hand or by making the other players “fold”.
Setting and organisation
At the beginning of a round of Texas Hold ‘em, the Dealer shuffles a 52 card deck. In both online and offline casinos and poker rooms, the dealer is a croupier. It is however possible for the players to deal the cards themselves in offline poker. In this case, the players at the table take it in turns to deal. In games with a croupier, each player is respectively “nominal dealer”. To indicate who is the round’s “nominal dealer”, a special chip is placed in front of him called the “Dealer Button”. The dealer button thus goes clockwise from player to player. In a nutshell, it permanently indicates the position of the dealer.

Setting and organisationAt the beginning of a round of Texas Hold ‘em, the Dealer shuffles a 52 card deck.
- Before the cards are dealt, the two players to the dealer’s left must place the blinds. The player seated directly on the dealer’s left places the small blind and his left-hand neighbour places the big blind.
- The player who has the dealer button, also called the ‘buck’, deals the cards, except in the presence of a house dealer who then deals the cards; but the player who has the dealer button is nevertheless called the “dealer”. The cards are dealt in two clockwise turns: each time, a card is dealt face down to each player, starting with the player in the Small Blind or UTG (Under the Gun), after the Big Blind… and finishing with the dealer. At the end of dealing, each player therefore has two cards, known only to themselves. The player is responsible for protecting his hand, notably when he examines it for the first time. These two cards are the only ones that the player receives individually and will only be (possibly) revealed at the showdown.
- When all of the players have looked at their hands, the pre-flop betting round begins, starting with the player to the left of the big blind and continuing clockwise.
- After the first betting round, the dealer “burns” a card (which is put aside) then deals the flop: three face up cards; these cards are community cards shared by all the players. Combined with the two private “hole” or “pocket” cards that each player keeps hidden, they are used to make up hands. All of the community cards laid on the table make up the board.
- New betting round. The player to the left of the dealer begins the betting. The same applies to all subsequent betting rounds. The dealer burns a card and deals a new community card: called the “Turn” or “Fourth Street”, which will also be used in each player’s hand.
- New betting round.
- The dealer burns a final card and deals a fifth and last card: called the “River” or “Fifth Street”.
- Last betting round.
- The Showdown: the players still in the game try to beat each other’s hands.
- Each player plays a five-card poker hand selected from among his two hole cards and the five cards on the board. It must be remembered that the player can include in his five-card hand, both of his hole cards, or one of them, or none if he chooses (if, for example, the combination of the five cards on the board is the best hand that he can obtain). The player with the best hand wins the pot.
The dealer then passes the button to the player on his left, who was previously in the small blind, a new game can then begin.
