Blackjack     

Of French origin, it was played at Louis XV’s court under the name of 21. This game was soon adopted by the English and, under the name “Van John”, left to conquer the United States. It returned to France in its modern form, under the name of Blackjack, and remains one of the most loved card games in France.

Firstly, the goal of the game

The player plays against the casino (also referred to as “the bank”) represented by the croupier. The object of the game is to get a card total score as close as possible to 21, without going over, while getting a higher card total than the bank.
The best possible hand is 21 in two cards, that is a 10 value-card and an Ace: this is known as a BLACKJACK.

Setting and organisation

Blackjack is played on a semi-circular table. A maximum of 7 players sit on the rounded side of the semi-circle and the croupier stands in front of them.  In front of each player, on the table top, squares or “boxes” are marked out, in which the players place their bets, represented by chips. The croupier uses 6 packs of 52 cards, 3 red and 3 blue. He shuffles these six decks according to very precise rules set by the casino, and asks one of the players to cut a red pack of cards. Next he cuts a blue pack himself and then inserts the six card decks in a container called a dealing shoe. The croupier takes out the 5 first cards which are said to be “burned”. The red card indicates the last cut.

The game can then begin.

How the game works

Each player bets by placing chips in the square in front of her while respecting the minumum and maximum stakes displayed on a sign on the gaming table.
The player can also play in several betting squares (up to three).
One player can play alone against the bank on condition of playing in at least two squares.

The croupier deals one card to each player, in clockwise order, face-up. Lastly he deals to himself also face-up.Lastly he deals to himself, also face-up.
He then deals a second card to the players, but not to himself.

The players thus have two cards and the bank one.
The croupier then asks each player what he wants to do. The latter has two alternatives:

    -either consider himself dealt; in which case he says “stand” or “stick”.
    -or ask for (hit) an additional card; in which case he says “card”.

The croupier will give him as many cards as he wants, but if he goes over 21, he “busts”: he loses the bet and the croupier immediately claims it. A Blackjack only occurs when 21 is obtained in two cards. The Ace is worth 11 or 1 according to the player’s interests.

During a game, if you want to be dealt another card, signal to the croupier that you want to hit by tapping a finger on the table in front of you or make a movement towards yourself with your hand.
Once you are satisified with your first two cards or with your hit, you have to indicate to the croupier that you want to stop. To do this, you should move your hand horizontally above your cards.
