New Casinos in Ohio

Ohio recently voted to allow the setting up of casinos in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo. This approval means that one casino will be set up in each of the four cities. This requires a change in the state's constitution which bans most forms of gambling. Four other measures that would have allowed gambling outside of the state lottery had already been rejected by Ohio voters. Ohio is now the 39th state to have legally operating casinos.

Dan Gilbert of Quicken Loans was a leading player in the campaign to introduce casino gaming to Ohio. Gilbert who is also the owner of the professional basket ball team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, will be the main partner in the Cleveland casino. He will invest in the casinos in Cincinnati and Cleveland and he and his partners will pay a $50 million licence fee for each of the casinos developed by them. The casinos in Toledo and Columbus will be built by other investors.

Gilbert has admitted that there would be good competition between his casinos in Ohio and the casinos in Detroit. The three casinos in Detroit, MGM Grand Casino, Motor City Casino and Greektown Casino already have competition from Caesars Windsor Casino.

Caesars Windsor is the largest casino/ hotel complex in Detroit. It first opened in temporary accommodation in 1994 and then became a permanent casino in 1998. It expanded in 2008 to include a 400 room hotel and the name changed from Casino Windsor to Caesars Windsor. The gambling age is 19 and it offers sports betting and World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournaments. It also offers players slot machines, a virtual roulette table and poker machines.

It is said that new casinos can widen the market and increase demand but on the other hand it is also claimed that in such a large market that new casinos take custom from existing casinos. In the case of the Detroit casinos new strategies to keep existing customers may be necessary. However it is hoped that old and new together will increase entertainment and retail income in the Great Lakes area.
