Steve Zegrean was convicted of hurting four people in a shooting at the New York-New York hotel and casino in Las Vegas in 2007. In July of that year, Zegrean aged 53, went to the casino with over 200 rounds of ammunition and fired 16 shots. When his gun jammed he was subdued as several people jumped on him and held him down until the police came.

It was argued in court that Zegrean went to the casino with the aim of killing as many people as he could. His defence lawyers contended that he set up the situation in the casino so that the police would kill him as a form of suicide and that it was not his intention to harm anyone. This argument was dismissed by the judge.

Zegrean was sentenced to 90 years and won’t be able to apply for parole before 26 years. Prosecutors said that this sentence, which is similar to a life sentence, was a warning to others who may have the same idea of carrying out such a shooting.

In court Zegrean apologised for what he did saying that he was mentally and physically unwell after his marriage broke up and he lost his work and his house. He also stated that he suffers from a drink problem. His victims included a dance teacher who can no longer work after being shot in the leg and a 13 year old boy who still has flashbacks to the shooting.

The New York New York casino is 84,000 square feet.
