Kazakhstan evokes for many of you the famous Kazakh reporter, Borat, sent to the United States to film a report on the Yankee way of life. However this little known country which Sacha Baron Cohen outrageously caricatures in his film is going to have its own Las Vegas. Yes, it’s not misinformation but Kazakhstan is going to build a replica of Las Vegas in the south-east of the country with many casinos. The cost of this monumental project is estimated at 30 billion dollars and it should take place over ten years. The American Mark Advent is the originator of this project being a specialist in the area of leisure with his company: Oz Companies. Kazakhstan is a strategic country for the implantation of the future Las Vegas because it’s positioned beside China, Russia, India and should attract tourists from the United Arab Emirates and Europe.

This massive project should start at the end of 2009 and there should be an airport in 2011. The cost of this airport in which Fraport should be involved (Fraport manages Frankfurt airport, editor’s note) will be 170 million euros. The airport should initially be able to welcome no less than 5 million tourists and in 2021 up to 25 million passengers. Fraport is to just provide its expertise in the management of airports without investing.

This project will be called Oz and should welcome 20 million visitors every year. The 25 casinos in the project will be built over an area of 11,000 hectares, hotels with a capacity of 42,000 rooms without forgetting almost 300,000 residences and 1,000 restaurants. Oz should create thousands of jobs as was the case in the international gaming capitals: Las Vegas or Macao. In 2007, the president of Kazakhstan, Noursoultan Nazarbaev , closed all casinos in order to reserve a zone dedicated uniquely to gaming. This will be a done thing in a few years time and it will be situated 70 kilometres north of Almaty, the ex-capital of Kazakhstan (the capital since 1998 is Astana and was chosen by President Nazarbaev, editor’s note).

With this monumental project, the world will have a view other than that given by Sacha Baron Cohen the title of whose film says it all “ Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”.
