Things are going badly between the municipality of Lans-en-Vercors and the group against the project to open a casino called “Lans Vegas”. One must go back to the year 2003 to understand what opposes the mayor, or the ex-mayor, and the 130 adherents of this active group against the opening of a casino. In 2003 the town council voted unanimously to build a casino in a protected nature area. Out of the 2,300 inhabitants of the village, 150 got together and created a group to oppose the project and call it “Lans Vegas”. The mayor, Guy Charron, wanted the fiscal revenues to be balanced between those of households and those of businesses. At that time, the fiscal revenues from households reached 95% compared to only 5% from businesses. According to the mayor, the casino would allow the provision of quite an amount of revenue which would enable many projects to be carried out in the commune. The members of the Lans Vegas group don’t see it in the same way and argue that “the situation isn’t critical”. Then the Vercors Natural Regional Park opposed the opening of the casino within its area and therefore the mayor decided to place it at the entrance to the park. At the beginning of 2004 the Moliflor group (now the group is called Joagroupe, editor’s note) won the tender. According to the group, the fiscal revenues should be an important financial manna that is: in the first year more than 110,000 euros, the second more than 670,000 and after five years of business no less than 990,000 euros. In the meantime, Jean-Paul Gouttenoire, the new mayor, was elected and is himself opposed to the construction of this casino for ethical reasons. However, he doesn’t have any choice but to respect the policy of his predecessor and finds himself in the sights of the Lans Vegas group.

But nothing is definite yet. In fact, the validity of the building permit hasn’t yet been granted by the courts. One will only know at the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010 if Lans-en-Vercors will have its own casino.
