Online poker : WPT in the hands of Partygaming

There are stories in the world of new technology that call to mind certain episodes of cult series from our childhoods in the 1980s such as Dynasty, Dallas or Santa Barbara. A series which causes a stir, rumours, various pressures sometimes secret, grand announcements, official declarations, unofficial declarations, everything was there in the affair which had Partygaming opposed to Gamynia concerning buying shares in the WPT brand, World Poker Tour. After weeks of transactions, the operator Partygaming walked away with the prize and bought the famous poker brand for 12 million dollars. A return to a B series in the world of online gaming.

world_poker_tour.jpgIt's now official, since our colleagues in Reuters have announced it, in September Partygaming will absorb WPT Enterprises and particularly the World Poker Tour brand to the disappointment of the Gamynia company which finishes in second place with the bitter taste of defeat in its mouth.

Since the beginning of 2000 the World Poker Tour has been one of the most prestigious poker competitions on the planet. Involving numerous tournaments, its final is shown every year on Canal+ in France and is commented by Patrick Bruel or Denis Balbir of France 2. Gus Hansen, Phil Havey or Daniel Negreanu have respectively won the World Poker Tour and have achieved fame thanks to this victory.

For a few months, the company that owns the World Poker Tour had been in negociations with a newcomer in the world of gaming and online gaming, Gamynia. This unknown company is, according to rumours, close to the Ipoker network and more particularly to the online poker room Titan Poker (Playtech). At the beginning of August 2009, WPT Enterprises announced the sale of all of its shares to Gamynia for the sum of 9 million dollars. Up to then there were no problems but that was not taking into account the ferocious appetite of other operators and in particular of Partygaming which had the nerve to make a counter offer which in the end turned out to be particularly and singularly efficient. In fact, by paying  more than symbolic damages of a million dollars to Gamynia, WPT Enterprises cancelled its arrangement with Titan Poker to give the rights to the World Poker Tour to Partygaming for 12.3 million dollars.

However, still according to the Reuters press release, the agreement won't be finalised until February 2010, leaving the unlucky Gamynia a last chance to bid higher.

If Partygaming really manages to reel in the WPT brand, it will become one of the largest poker groups in the world. Ah yes, not only will Partygaming increase in importance on the web but Partygaming will also promote the World Series of Poker (WSOP) on RTL9.

The financial television series about the WPT isn't completely over but it seems none the less that Partygaming will win the rights to the famous brand.
