The Olympique Lyonnais (OL) football club will wear the Betclic online gaming site colours but only outside of French football pitches. In fact, Jean-Michel Aulas' club has found a new sponsor who has taken over from the Accor group which didn't wish to renew the contract which linked it for several years the same as Renault Truck. In our columns we have dealt with the influx of new online sponsors in the world of football in an article published last March entitled «  Online Gaming: Unibet on PSG jerseys?» This time the charismatic and much decried president of the OL cursed the fact that players can't wear the jersey printed with the logo of the online gaming site specialising mainly in sport betting although it also offers casino games, poker or bets on horse racing. During the Olympique Lyonnais- Le Mans match, Claude Puel's players wore jerseys devoid of all internet gaming brands even though before the match the trainer had said that his players were going to go onto the pitch with the name of the new sponsor. On the other hand, during the Peace Cup which took place in Spain, the OL players were able to wear their new jersey bearing the Betclic logo. Aulas still complained about the league's decision which conforms to French law and online gaming won't be legal until 2010. At best in January 2010.....at worst in the first half of next year since the government has taken its time adopting the law and also in setting up the authority for regulating online gaming (ARJEL). However, Jean-Michel Aulas maintains that before a European court, the Lyon club would win immediately. In fact, the European Commission ordered France to open up online gaming and ended any state monopoly with the Francaise des Jeux and the PMU. The Paris Saint-Germain football club will wear the Unibet (online gaming site, editor's note) colours, Olympique Lyonnais those of Betclic and there's a strong chance that other football clubs will also be sponsored by the big names in internet gaming.

Betclic has a gaming licence in Malta and its main activity is in sport betting. Players also have access to casino games and horse racing betting or online poker. The ex-international player and captain of the French team, Marcel Desailly, promotes Betclic's online gaming site and one often sees Betclic advertisements in online newspapers.

The football club for which the excellent player Miralem Pjanic plays is going to have to wait to wear the Betclic colours. In the meantime, Jean-Michel Aulas won't have any choice but to wait to profit from the expensive transfers of new recruits including the argentinian Lisandro Lopez.
