Addiction to gambling : moving towards a solution?

A research team in Quebec university is going to try to understand how players become addicted to gambling. This serious study will be carried out on a hundred  players and the results will be known in two years. Ten addicted players have already been interviewed by the team of psychology professor Monique Seguin who leads the team which should provide « solutions » to the problems of many addicted players.

The aim of this study is to understand how these players have reached a high level of dependence on gaming whether it is scratch cards, casino games ( such as slot machines, baccarat, roulette, blackjack), poker ( a game that is expanding rapidly and extremely popular, editor's note) or sports betting. Also, addiction to gaming isn't only linked to actual gaming but also to online gaming whose internet sites are more and more plentiful. Addiction to a game is a long process which takes years and the aim of this research is to understand how the pleasure can turn into hell. Also, this study should be able to provide information on factors which cause dependence which can affect everyone. In fact, no exact profile of an addicted player exists, and everyone could become addicted to gambling due to financial, family or psychological problems. Many players think they'll be able to sort out their financial situation by going to gamble in casinos and so repay their debts. But it's the exact opposite which happens and addicted players, thinking they'll improve their daily life, play in a casino or fill in lottery tickets and enter an infernal spiral from which it's difficult to escape. As for saying that players are addicted because they live in a town that has a casino, this report will provide information for answers to explain the link between the phenomenon of compulsive gambling and the presence of casinos.

This Canadian team, made up of ten researchers, has a budget of almost 100,000 euros a part of which comes from the Quebec Fund for health and culture. This study should advance research on a thorny subject often dealt with in the media. It's true that addiction is a scourge and that many players without limits bet exorbitant amounts which go beyond reason. However, the majority of players whether in actual casinos or on the sites of online casinos or in poker play for the fun element, to have a good time while hoping to win.
