Profession : professional Poker Player
Poker is phenomenally successful from Paris to Buenos Aires passing through Tokyo or Canberra. Who hasn't dreamt of one day closing the door on one's and to turn one's passion for poker into one's career. It's not a given for just anybody to sit at poker tables whose greatest tournaments take place in Las Vegas (WSOP) or in Europe (EPT) without forgetting the many tournaments that take place throughout the year. Profession : professional poker player.
Printing « Profession : professional poker player » on his business cards could be the case for the new (prodigy) French poker player who is much talked about: Antoine Saout. We already wrote an article about him in one of our columns called « Finistere honoured in the WSOP poker tournament ». Antoine Saout has the exact profile that makes many young poker players, who want to turn their passion onto their profession, dream. To summarize Antoine Saout's profile: 25 years old, passionate about poker, qualified for the final table of the 2009 WSOP and assured to pocket not less than 900,000 dollars. This young man from Finistere is an « example » for millions of poker fans as is the famous poker player, Bertrand Grospellier. Saout who was unknown before the WSOP is now in the limelight and he is among the nine qualified out of the 6464 players registered for the World Series of Poker. This player is ensured of a large bank account without mentioning a sponsorship contract which should give him a seven digit cheque. In fact online poker rooms are snapping up poker players with a promising future so they'll wear the cap with the colours of the room or the t-shirt with the logo. Rooms such as Pokerstars or Fulltilt snap up at very high prices the big names in Texas Hold'em poker and even Poker 770 in a more « showbiz » element with notably Virginie Efira or ex- football players who have become poker players.
Poker makes young people dream
To perfectly master Texas Hold' em poker isn't a given for everybody and also to gain a living from this passion. In fact it's not rare to hear of young people wanting to stop their studies or wishing to devote themselves only to poker and to make it their profession. Antoine Saout was one of these young people who want to devote themselves full time to poker. This student at Evry Engineering College stopped his studies, went back home and started to play online poker while working part time. To make some pocket money, he loaded newspapers into trucks for 1,000euros a month. But an Antoine Saout, is one in a million. To believe that everyone could have the same career as an atypical player like Saout ( he started poker only two years ago by playing on online poker sites, editor's note) is false. Poker is a game which demands a perfect mastery of probabilities, bluffing and strategies that can lead to victory. Without mentioning « Poker tells », these signs which betray the opponents' game or a high level of physical and mental form.
Poker is a cerebral sport for which there is a lot of demand but only a chosen few. Like in every sport, the selection process is difficult and to make one's way in this closed world, one can only rely on one's capacities and competence. Will Antoine Saout follow in the footsteps of Chris moneymaker, an accountant who won the 2003 WSOP? We will meet on the 7th of November to find out.
