Times are hard for Canadian casinos and gaming
In Canada, casinos have long faces and for the first time in 16 years the whole industry of games of chance is slowing down. It must be said that the canadians' morale is extremely low because of the economic crisis which has touched all sectors of the economy. A rare phenomenon : even lottery tickets are less sought after by Canadian gamers who hope to win the jackpot by choosing the correct numbers. Canadians are spending equally less whether in casinos, on bingo or video poker. Nobody is wasting even the smallest amount and the people of Quebec know this well because this region is the provence where households spend the least on games of chance whether on lottery tickets or games involving luck. Canadians are trusting less to luck and households which spend on games of chance are becoming less. In 2000, 75% of canadians gambled once and seven years later it's just a little over 50%. The inhabitants of the province of Manitoba are the most active in the area of gaming that is they buy lottery tickets, go to casinos to play on the machines or play bingo: more than 50% of the inhabitants claim they fulfill their passion.
The budget allotted for gaming in 2007 is quite high in Canada: households in Quebec claiming to play games of chance spend about $456, in Ontario $726 and in New Brunswick $440. Even though gaming activity is going through a bad time with the world economic crisis, the revenue is still quite high at more than 8.5 billion euros. Quebec is well provided for with casinos and has just opened a fourth casino in Mont-Tremblant whose aim is to attract and satisfy the many tourists who come in their millions each year for the mountains and the ski slopes. In fact Loto-Quebec has inaugurated its new casino which was somewhat perturbed. This casino has joined the list of casinos in Quebec namely Montreal, Charlevoix and Lac Leamy casinos. To find out whether this opening has come at a bad time is another story. To be continued...
