The Mandelieu casino, Royal Casino, was a victim of a hoax. An anonymous telephone call indicated to the hotel reception that the casino was rigged and that a bomb was going to explode. The casino was immediately evacuated, the hotel also and panic was palpable among the clients many of whom had to leave in night attire given the late hour. It must be said that at almost 10pm  some clients had already gone to sleep and were woken suddenly by the sirens. Not less than 200 people gathered in the carpark and a security operation was quickly put in place to deal with a possible explosion. The hotel clients were sent to three neighbouring hotels and the less lucky ones were only able to go back to their rooms in the middle of the night.

Explosives technicians and a trained explosives detection dog were sent to the site. The rooms were searched one by one and didn't show any trace of explosives. Likewise for the 7,000 square metres of the casino which weren't rigged. After four hours of intensive searches, the police were able to decide that it was a hoax. The person who carried out this stupid act will remember it for a long time because he was identified and is facing a prison sentence as well thousands of euros in damages. The loss of earnings for the casino, taking into account the payment of a night in an hotel for the clients, amounts to 75,000 euros.

The royal Casino in Mandelieu offers its clients 200 slot machines and 11 gaming tables as well as poker tables. This casino cost 12 million euros to renovate.
