Daily news reports bring bad economic news with factory closures, reduncancies all over the place  not to mention the bizarre propositions of people looking for employment who are ready to do anything to get work like the ex-hospital worker who is offering one of his kidneys in exchange for work. We are definitely in the middle of an economic crisis and one of the business sectors which is badly hit by the recession is the gaming industry. In fact, the actual French casinos are in a bad way after a catastrophic 2008 and this phenomen is ongoing. The leading group of the French casinos ( in terms of gross product from gaming, editor's note), the Barriere group, has shown a 12% reduction in its business since January 2009. Last year Dominique Desseigne's group registered a 15% reduction.

Dominique Desseigne has taken steps to “limit the damage” by deciding not to replace employees who leave his many casinos present in the four corners of France. The Barriere group is counting on the online gaming market to attract players and replace the losses of the actual casinos. Its online gaming site was launched in March 2009 and it is destined only for english players due to the fact that the United Kingdom accepts online casinos. On the other hand France will surely be late legalising its market because the parliamentary calendar is full and the law must be discussed by parliament. Besides during a conference on the opening up of the online market in France which took place in the Maison de la Chimie in Paris, Jean-Francois Lamour said that it's probable that the first gaming licences probably won't see light of day on the 1st of January 2010 although it's not impossible.

The Barriere group is waiting patiently until the French authorities state clearly what they count on doing for online casinos because up to now only online poker sites, sports betting and horse racing will be legalised in seven months time. On the other hand nothing is clear for the online casinos notably forbidden games like slot machines or roulette. The Barriere group didn't follow the example of the Partouche group which decided to defy the state by launching its online gaming sites from Malta and Gibraltar and which has attracted the anger of the independent casinos notably that of Gujan- Mestras.

Dominique Desseigne's group has 35 casinos in France and 5 abroad. Present in the world of hotels, Barriere has luxury hotels notably Fouquet's or the Majestic, in which the Cannes Film Festival jury lodges each year and which has been extended by 10,000 metres for a sum of 72 million euros.
