Online games: Free.fr launches its “Poker” site

Having decided to benefit from the opening up of online gaming to competition, Free.fr, in partnership with MadeinPoker.com, is launching its new gateway dedicated to poker.

Discreet but legal, Free's new gateway is the first step into online gaming for the parent company Iliad. In partnership with MadeinPoker.com (Chiligaming group), the FAI offers news, articles, photos, videos, a forum and a beginners area on poker.

What is happening with the law?
A European Commission injunction dating from 2007, asked France to officially open its online gaming market or legal action would be taken against it. Last month, a law was proposed for January 2010 but it has raised some opposition.

During a conference organised by the UMP MP Jacques Myard in May 2009, those interested in the online gaming market made their opposition known. High taxes apart, these operators demand that the 7.5% tax be imposed on the gross income from the games( the difference between the wagers and winnings) rather than on income ( the total of all wagers).

Also, the Budget minister, Eric Woerth, has proposed to limit the winnings of players to 80-85%  of their wager. This measure taken to avoid addiction has been singled out by Maarten Haijer, director of reglementary affairs at the EGBA ( European Gaming and Betting Association). According to him, there is no study proving the relationship between addicition and the amount won by a player.

According to Pontus Lindwall, Director General of the Swedish online gaming site Betsson, the text won't fulfill the needs of consumers in general.

As for its entry into law in January, delays are “bearable but are becoming tense” according to Jean-Francois Lamour, opponent  of the law and ex-minister for Youth and Sports. At the moment this project isn't on the Assembly's agenda although it should be there before the summer. It will also most certainly  be subject to admendments.

Candidates already ready
Apart from all this, the market once opened, will be very fruitful. Even if Iliad, the parent company of Free, has already laid the first block in the construction of its online gaming and betting empire, other candidates are ready to enter into competition with the FAI. Among these, Stephane Courbit ( Ex director of Endemol France and associate of the Société des Bains de Mer), Patrick Le Lay ( via his investment company Serendipity), the Amaury group ( editor of the daily newspapers Le Parisien and L'Equipe and organiser of the Tour de France) and of course the French casino groups Barrière, Partouche and Tranchant. Partnerships have also been established between internet betting and media sites (Unibet and RMC, BetClicand Europe...)
